First foods checklist

A simple guide to weaning your baby

What's inside the guide

The First Foods Guide is written by Jo Lenz, our HCPC-registered paediatric dietitian, and covers the questions every parent asks in the first weeks of weaning: which vegetables and fruits to offer first, how to introduce allergens like egg and peanut safely, how to move from smooth purées to lumps and finger foods, and how much your baby actually needs at six months.

When should I start weaning?

The NHS recommends introducing solid foods at around six months, alongside breast milk or formula. Signs your baby is ready include sitting up with support, good head control, and reaching for food. Our guide walks you through the first five weeks, one day at a time.

Why first foods matter

The flavours and textures babies meet between six and twelve months shape their eating habits for years. Offering a wide variety early — including bitter vegetables like broccoli and spinach — is one of the best-evidenced ways to raise a child who eats well. That's the thinking behind every V&Me meal, cooked fresh each morning in our Battersea kitchen and delivered chilled across London.
